Farmfield House Surgery is one of the busy healthcare providers with the constant daily energy need. The increasing cost of energy and the broad sustainability requirements of the NHS motivated the institute to seek for a sustainable solution. The management team needed a solution that was renewable, allowed running costs and dependence with the grid to be reduced.

Solar4Good established a 53.3 kWp solar photovoltaic system on the sloping roof above the institute. Although a non-south facing roof orientation is difficult to design, our experienced professionals developed personalised workflows in such a way that it would achieve maximum performance with seamless integration into the structure of the building.

The technical scope included:

  • 130 × Canadian Solar 410W panels (53.3 kWp capacity)
  • 1 × Solis 50kW 3-Phase Inverter (SOL-S5-GC50K-DC)
  • Roof pitch: 45° (North-East & West facing)
  • Project Cost: £54,000

Solar4Good offered an end-to-end installation process, including consultation and thorough planning to introduce minimal disturbance to patients and staff during commissioning.

Key aspects included:

  • Maximised over Complex Roof Angles: Programmed to harmonise the production between north-east and west exposures to maintain consistent generation during the day
  • Excellent Quality Parts: Combination of Canadian Solar modules with a Solis inverter in order to achieve steady performance and stability.
  • Healthcare-Friendly Delivery: Installation will be conducted in a way that reduces noise and interference during surgery times..
  • Scalable Design: The system can be integrated with battery storage over time as the needs of the surgery change.

The system currently generates 55 000 -58 000 kWh each year with more than 35% of the electricity consumption of the institute. This is a reliable way to reduce utility bills and to become more resilient to changes in electricity prices.

Environmental Impact:

  • Annual CO₂ savings: ~11,500 – 12,000 kg
  • Lifetime CO₂ offset: ~280,000 – 300,000 kg
  • Having the equivalent of planting 11,000 -12,000 trees.

Financial Impact:

  • System cost: £54,000
  • Lifetime energy savings (25 years): £240,000 – £260,000 £255,000
  • Average yearly savings: £9,500 – £10,400
  • ROI / Payback period: 5.5 – 6 years

Client Benefits:

  • Industrially consistent cost reductions to invest back into patient care and services
  • Apparent sustainability commitment, development of trust within the community.
  • Greater energy market resiliency.
  • Giving back in the long-term to NHS environmental objectives
